Capital & Regional plans major retail and resi extension at Walthamstow mall

Capital & Regional has submitted plans for a significant retail extension and residential development at The Mall Walthamstow.

The company is seeking consent for an 86,000 sq ft retail extension at the shopping centre to accommodate up to 12 new retailers and five food and beverage operators.

Capital & Regional is also seeking outline planning consent for up to 460 new homes, to be delivered with a development partner. The homes would be located above The Mall, in keeping with Waltham Forest Council’s policy of encouraging residential development in the town centre.

The redeveloped Mall would sit within an enhanced two-acre town square.

Capital & Regional acquired the centre in 1997 - in 2015 the company undertook a full refurbishment of the  shopping centre and has subsequently secured long-term commitments from a number of national brands including TK Maxx, Sports Direct, The Gym Group and Lidl.

Ken Ford, executive director at Capital & Regional, said: “Following the successful refurbishment of The Mall in 2015, we see huge potential to create an integrated destination comprising an enhanced retail and leisure offer and much needed new homes, all set in a remodelled public square adjacent to Walthamstow transport hub.

“We look forward to working with Waltham Forest Council, residents and the town’s existing retailers and business owners to bring these plans forward.”
